爆竊遇到報應

Burglar calls police after finding body

A burglar who found a man's body in a house he had broken into was so surprised by the discovery that he let out a scream, alerting neighbours.

The would-be burglar then ran home before contacting police and telling them what had happened, a New Zealand police officer said.

The 21-year-old found Ross Wilson's body after breaking into the house on Eliot St in Fairfield, a suburb of Hamilton, just after midnight on Wednesday.

Hamilton City tactical co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Freda Grace said that, given the intense situation the man found himself in, he would most likely be let off with a warning.

"But the investigation is not complete - it is one day old and is something of a delicate and sensitive nature," she told the Waikato Times yesterday.

A female relative of Mr Wilson is calling for the man who found him to be prosecuted.

"The guy shouldn't have been in there in the first place. He was there to do a burglary. I don't care if he got a fright."

She said her relative had been burgled a few months earlier and it may have contributed to his mental state prior to his death. Mr Wilson had reportedly wanted to move to a safer area.

A Facebook post Mr Wilson made on March 11 read: "To the scumbag who burgled my house - I hope I'm there to watch when karma comes and f---s you up."

Mr Wilson's death was not considered suspicious and has been handed over to the Coroner.

His relative said Mr Wilson, who was originally from Porirua, had six children who did not live with him and he worked in a sales job.

Although he "hated" the area where he rented a house, he could not afford to move elsewhere.

"He said he had drug dealers and all sorts around him. I told him to get out of there but he didn't have the money."

His relative had not seen him for at least a week before his body was found and suspected Mr Wilson, who lived alone, might have died some days before. She said he "seemed fine" when she last saw him.
