Thanks for the link.
Use "love" as a qualifier to decide eligibility is doomed to be a failure. It is by nature a sentimental word instead of rational. The candidate should only be asked to bear allegiance to China and HKSAR and execute his/her duty to the best of his/her ability. "Love" is so intangible and vague and should not have any part to play in the culling process. Look at the oath of the US president when taking office,
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
It would be awkward if a person overtly pronounces that he does not love his country and yet chosen as the President or in our case, the Chief Executive. Equally, it would be ludicrous if the candidate only spells out empty words devoid of substance and he gets the entry ticket. There are many such tee shirts sold in Tsimshatsui "I love HK". Like we agreed before, the less said the better. It is always the best tactics. But, the fools on both sides just do not appreciate.
Thus the best response is for the candidates to wear those "I love country and HK" t-shirts and be done with it. How can anyone says they do not love the country and HK while they wear it on their skins? To make the case even stronger, they can perhaps tattoo 「精忠報國」on their backs.
刪除Besides, there is a huge different between patriotism and nationalism. It is patriotic to question all the affairs occurring within and without a country; it is nationalistic to blindly follow what the authority is saying without giving any thoughts.
Legally speaking, no state can demand anyone to love his/her country unequivocally, since most people are born into a country without a choice. If one is a citizen by birth, the state does not ask him to swear allegiance to the country; that only happens to immigrants. By that standard, immigrants are more patriotic since they chose to live there and swore an allegiance.
Truly so. Most people cannot tell the difference between patriotism and nationalism. It is often the case of the blind leads the blind. The tatoo is not on the back. It is on the forehead.
