Shy不只害羞

標少書讀得不好,語文根底差,但不吝嗇和朋友分享自已微末的知識。今天談shy這個字。大部分人都認識這字最普通的解釋--害羞。除了害羞,shy這個字有很多其他的意思及用法。

Adjective
She is two weeks shy of 50.
再過兩星期她便50歲了。

We are still a few hundred dollars shy of our goal.
我們尚欠幾百元就達標了。

I am a bit shy of this person.
我不大相信這個人。

Verb
The horse shied at the snake in the road.
馬見到路上有蛇而驚退。

I shied the stone at the stray dog.
我向那隻野狗擲石。

  2. 小沛子is always naughty. By the way, it should be shitted instead of shited. Since she mentioned shit, let me tell you a shitty joke. There is an expression "shit hits the fan" which means a chaotic situation. The expression probably originated from the joke below.

    A man in a crowded bar needed to defecate but couldn't find a bathroom, so he went upstairs and used a hole in the floor. Returning, he found everyone had gone except the bartender, who was cowering behind the bar. When the man asked what had happened, the bartender replied, 'Where were you when the shit hit the fan?'

  3. Shit hit the fan 是非常common的saying. 幾乎每天在公司都聽見.這情況令人擔心,說明災難經常發生!
